List of All Game Files & Programs Used For Modding

This is a table of all files found in the original game and additional modding work.

File types are listed with their extensions, full names, their uses and what programs are used to open and edit each file as well as the location of the files and these options.

Rise of Legends is a PC game for Windows operating systems, it works on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 and uses Windows programs to edit the game files.
It may be possible to transfer individual files for editing in software on another OS such as Mac and Linux and after editing, transfer the newly edited files back into the game on a Windows computer.

Additional Game Modding Details & Links


Code

- ROL's game code was created with C++

- The scripting language is derivative of C and JavaScript in most of its grammar and syntax and a knowledge of basic C and/or JavaScript is needed to modify and create scripts

- XML Copy Editor, Hex Workshop, Notepad++, Notepad & Wordpad can be used to view and modify the BHS, BXML, XML & XSD files which are scripts, rules, tribe data, etc

- Microsoft Visual Studio, OllyDbg and x64dbg can be used to view and debug the game code

- Online x86 / x64 Assembler and Disassembler can be used for converting both ways between assembly code and machine code


Data

- ROL has game data compressed into .BIG files, a type of archive

- ROL BIG Archiver can be used to extract/repack the game data files for further viewing and modding


Engine

- ROL uses the Big Huge Engine developed by Big Huge Games


Physics

- ROL uses the AGEIA PhysX physics engine which was later acquired by Nvidia here


Graphics

- 3DSMax can be used to mod the BHA, BH3, PFA & PFB files which are 3D models and animations for buildings, prefabs, units, animations, etc

- All models and animations were exported using Collada in ASCII, then converted from Collada to PFB. That code might still exist in the editor but may be hidden

- 3DSMax can be acquired free as a personal or student Educational License here

- Gimp and Adobe Photoshop can be used to mod the BMP, DDS & TGA files which are images for unit, building, etc graphics, textures and skins

- Gimp is available for free here, Adobe Photoshop for students is available here

- SpeedTree Version 4 or less can be used to mod the SPT files which are the 3D models for flora, trees, shrubs, plants, grass, etc

- SpeedTree for Games Version 4 can be acquired free for a 1 month trial here

- There may also be plugins for 3DS Max, Maya, Gmax, Blender, etc which enable SPT modding inside those programs
