I have another question along these lines. Are you either planning or discussing the institution of that indescribably despicable piece of excrement policy that ES put into effect for AoE3 known as one account per cd key?

Will there be a demo?

And if so, any chance you could tell us when it will be released?

What will the absolute maximum mapsize be?

In RoN (by altering the XML files), it was possible to obtain (and successfully play with) a maximum mapsize of 140x140 (instead of the default 100x100).

If I remember correctly, one could actually create something like a 920+x920+ map within the editor but one was not able to successfully save it (let alone even try to play with it .... although one would only have been able to play in one of the corners anyway).

The limited mapsize was imho one of the most severe limitations in RoN .... as well as the maximum of 1000 placeable objects.

Therefore, will there be a limit with mapsize and the number of placeable objects (as there is with pop cap)? As someone who intrinsically dislikes hardcoded limitations in a game, I freely admit that I will be deadfully disappointed if there are major limitations in these abovementioned parameters.

From what I have heard, CIV (4) does not have (m)any hardcoded limitations .... it is rather the capacity of one's machine that decides exactly "how big" one can play. Imho, this is an excellent strategy for game design as future systems will obviously be much more powerful than today's models (Moore's Law and all that).

@Jeremy de Beer: I too like the fact that Civ4 can be modded in almost every way, allowing for huge flexibility. However, that ability comes with it's disadvantages as well. Since Python is an interpreted language, it is by nature slow, and all of the game's data is stored in XML, which is easy to understand, but uses more memory (I think). As for the scripting language, I would have preferred something that is compilable, perhaps a C derivative like C#.

    Another question:

Do heroes level up through battles to gain skills as stated in Game Zones's preview or do you have to spend resources to make them gain new skills as TGE said in his BHG visit article?

    One more question:

When are you planing to release a gameplay footage?

Is the arab nation the Alim or Alin? Because you keep posting 'Alin' and I thought it was Alim. :P

To clarify, the Alin are not Arab at all, but a race inspired after the magic-users and creatures that populated the fantastic tales of The Arabian Nights as narrated by Scheherazade. They are a people of sand, fire and glass and residents of Aio not to be confused with races found on Earth. To answer your question though, the true spelling of this race is "Alin", though "Alim" may appear erroneously from time to time.

Could you tell me what have been or are the most inspiring existing games to the RoL developers (Besides, of course, RoN itself)? Age of Empires? Age of Mythology? Starcraft? Civilisation? Oddworld? Or a FPS even? Or maybe there are specific books or movies? The concept so far seems unique, but still there have to be some existing pieces of art giving inspiration...

This is a toughy, since there are really so many sources of inspiration the team draws from. AoM, Civ, AoE, RoN, SC, WC, AoW, and a bevy of other acronymed strategy games have crossed our path in the development of Rise of Legends. The art of Leonardo Da Vinci and the middle-eastern "Arabian Nights" mythos have certainly served to inspire and motivate, as is well apparent in the fantastical depiction of Aio.

In terms of multi-player funcionality, what can we expect?

We're still hammering out things on the multiplayer end, so I can't really state anything in the definitive. Keep an eye on the official site for announcements regarding multiplayer features in the upcoming months.

I can't say for sure, as that may in fact be something our publisher, Microsoft, wants implemented. I'll have more info for you on this closer to launch.

    Quote:

As far as I know, there will be a demo. I don't know when it will be released, but since the target for launch is Spring '06, probably either before or right at the onset of spring. This is subject to change, though.

    Aha. 128.
Bear in mind that the editor is going to get a polish before release, so that number is really quite arbitrary right now. I will make sure to pass along the info about the desired extensibility to the editor folks, though.

Both. Your hero gains new abilities by purchasing and upgrading them with resources, and can also gain levels by fighting in combat with enemies.

    - just stay human & react as human beings, although the all around influence of computers around you may make it hard... But staying human is better, because you are one, GreyPawn.... :-) (I`m serious on this one. I`ve seen people who 'killed' almost everything human in theirselves & react as if they are some computer, as if the computer is some higher norm... Really sad, & in the end it is a fiction human beings can`t live up to, just because they are human beings... I would say: love being human, it is perfect, dudes & dudettes :-))

Normal maps are a sort of bump maps, but I guess that doesn't say anything to you either. (this might help)
Normal maps make low poly models look like high ones because they "fake" the light. Anyway, I'm sure that if you ask one of the artist about this they can give you a better explaination.

Yeah, it's a pretty nifty little feature. If you've ever played Doom 3 and noticed the high level of model Detail on it, that's because of Normal mapping.

I don't know if Normal mapping would be worth it though. On an FPS with a much larger scale of models, that's one thing, we like seeing that much detail. But on an RTS, I don't think it'd really do anything that we couldn't do without.

The BHG office is a very relaxed work environment. I don't think anyone here feels overwhelmed, and I certainly don't. The BHG gang are determined and dedicated workers, and stress really is in short supply. Yesterday, a number of the developers took some time to play around with a nifty little radio controlled helicopter in the office. Right now, we are in the phase of refining and polishing the game, definitely crunch-time, but by no means does that damper our spirits or diminish the great fun we're having making the game.

As for schedule, I can't really say definitively, but from what I've seen we are on target for a Spring release.

It is taking some time for the change to filter through, and most of what has been published thus far has been based on the preview and beta copies of the game, which contained the earlier version of the spelling.

Are we using normal maps? Yes, yes we are. Buildings, terrain and units will all utilize this technology.

You're using Normal maps in an RTS? Wow. Sweet. This game should be... revising of every RTS I've seen, graphics-wise at least. Ok, here's a few of my questions.

    1. Can we rotate around, like looking from the west instead of from the south?

    2. Have you read "Creating the Art of the Game"?

    3. What happened to Graham? The guy who did your job back with RoN.

    4. Will RoL utilize the "Unique Resources" that RoN had?

Some parts of the environment can in fact be smashed up, and is more the realm of the CTW campaign. In skirmishes and multiplayer however, the terrain is generally more static.

The graphics are quite incredible in RoL. Of the screenshots we have released on the official site, only a couple aren't actual gameplay shots from cutscenes. In fact, at a cursory glance, it appears that only Screenshot 20 is from a cutscene and not actual gameplay, so that should give you some idea as to how powerful the graphics for RoL are. On to your questions-

    1. Yes. You can zoom in and out on the map and rotate it any way you like. You can even put the camera in a nearly top-down view or zoom in to the "over the shoulder" style.

    2. Nope. But its on my laundry list of books to read. I'm currently reading "Developing Online Games: An Insider's Guide" by Jessica Mulligan & Bridgette Patrovsky.

    3. Cannibalized him in an attempt to absorb his powers. Or, erm...what ODA said.

    4. Nope, but with all the other gameplay features, they won't be missed.

    Quote:

    1. I haven't seen a focus fire ability yet on any of the units, though the Vinci Musketeers and the Alin Sand Walkers are able to change "firing" modes to alter damage given and taken. Using the different firing modes effectively can definitely alter the course of a battle.

    2. By random map scripts, do you mean random scripted events? If so, no, not to my knowledge. If by random map scripts you mean randomly generated terrain and characteristic environments, yes.

What I mean by focus firing is that if you attack x (50 hp) with 2 y (25 attack each) x dies instantly.

In RoN you couldn't do that. For example: 1 horse archer can kill 1 citizen in 2 shots but 2 horse archer can't kill 1 citizen if they fire at the same time.

How is the land leviathin created? Does it suddenly appear next to the "war factory"? I'm thinking that units that take up half the screen suddenly appearing might be a little odd...

Do buildings get build with scaffolding like in other modern games or do they "appear" built?

Can you name a couple of the 8 Vinci unique one-time-build structures? (The telescope was already mentioned.)

The Land Leviathan is created at the Steam Fortress and is quite a force to be reckoned with. At current, it appears on the map when built, but thats subject to change. Buildings are built and destroyed in much the same way, in that they display the progress of the construction or damage being done to them.

Besides the telescope, another one of the Vinci unique one-time-build structures is the Borehole, which increases your Timonium production. A second is The Doge Statue, a magnificent edifice that can produce the elite personal bodyguards of the Doge. The Borehole is actually my favorite. Keep an eye out for a screenshot of it in the near future.
