I noticed some of my audio is crackling in RoL, so I went and checked the files themselves and sure enough they crackle too.
The credits music seems to be the worst of it. Could anyone give me an md5 checksum of opera_lenora aio_chant?
Reinstalling is not really an option for me, I have no CD drive. And my last CD drive chewed up my first disk :/

If the installed game is from a download then that may be the reason for the crackling and other problems people have when not using an official disc copy.
However the Rise of Nations music files also have a crackling sound, I don't know the reason why.
Another way to reinstall would be to install the game on an external hd...

They're from my original install from 2006, been keeping it on various harddrives since. I just noticed the crackle. Maybe I never payed attention it before. Thanks anyways ^^

Do other programs, sounds, music also crackle? If so, then it may be a physical problem with the speakers, wires, connections or sound card.

However, if the audio is crackling but none of the other files are corrupted (e.g. the game still runs), I would suspect it's some kind of problem with audio playback.
If you open the audio files in another media player, do they still crackle?
Indeed, if any other applications besides ROL have crackling audio, that could offer a clue as to what may be happening.
